The Jinkx & Dela Holiday Special

Full disclosure: I’m not very familiar with the world of drag queens. I apologize if any comment comes off as ignorant. I can assure you this has more to do with the lack of knowledge of said culture, and not because I’m against it. I’m just a film critic evaluating films, not the culture being portrayed. For what it’s worth, shows like The Jinkx & Dela Holiday Special work as interesting pieces of entertainment that allow traditional viewers to explore other genres and worlds.

The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special is a drag queen Christmas show.

In it, everything becomes a subject to the pair’s consideration. From Christian values to the more commercial side of the festivities. And every single comment coming from the two drag icons seems like a sharp blow to the traditional side of Christmas. And it’s a funny show. No, it’s a hilarious and very well written play that functions fully in this format of a televised play. In fact, the production value is impressive at some point.

The art of drag is explored thoroughly in a story about two icons trying to survive the conservative values of Christmas. It’s musical comedy to the max, as both performers intentionally ridicule themselves in a world of jingles and figures that are traditionally set in religious consideration. The result is a sleazefest that elevates the subculture and sets it as the definite anti-culture.

However, if we go to the basics of the experience, The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special is just too funny. I cackled loudly as the performers turned up a notch from the practices of Christmas and ended up making their version of it. Could this be a traditional Christmas film in the near future? I don’t know, but anything THAT funny deserves attention. The film also works as an effective preview of what is surely going to be a live act. If you have the opportunity to attend, don’t think twice about doing it. You will have a blast!

The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special speaks of the awkward side of Christmas. That which calls for discussion on Christmas dinners, and reencounters with family members that don’t waste an opportunity to make you uncomfortable. Jinkx and DeLa try their best to make us feel part of their celebration, no matter what you believe in, the color of your skin, or who or what you like. Everyone is welcome in this set that reminds us of well produced sitcoms and Christmas Specials.

Regardless, it isn’t a show for everyone. They are aware of that. For some viewers, Christmas may be a time that doesn’t call for sexual innuendos and dirty jokes. The way they almost warn this is part of the genius script behind The Jinkx & DeLa Holiday Special. Sure, it will be offensive for some, but what’s a celebration if not an opportunity to offend the most traditional side of our society that rejects change or inclusion like they reject different religions?
